Brookwood Medical Center Commemorates
Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month with Balloon Release Event
Birmingham, AL…September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, and Brookwood Medical Center will be raising awareness with a balloon release on September 16, 2004, at 12:45 p.m. in front of the entrance to the Brookwood Women’s Medical Center. The balloons will represent the many gynecologic cancer deaths estimated to occur this year in the state of Alabama.
Since 1999 September has officially been Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM). In recognition of GCAM, “The Four Things You Can Do!” has been developed by experienced gynecologic oncologists as an educational stepping stone to help women to begin taking control of their gynecologic health.
* G – Get to know your family history
* C – Conduct an on-line cancer risk assessment at www.wcn.org
* A – Ask questions; educate yourself about gynecologic cancers
* M – Make an appointment for your annual gynecologic exam and PAP test.
“Any woman is at risk of developing a gynecologic cancer,” says Jackie Martinek, vice president of Brookwood’s Women’s and Oncology services. “Some of the most common gynecologic cancers have very subtle symptoms which can easily be overlooked or dismissed. This is why it is so vitally important for all women to see their gynecologists regularly. This event is simply to remind women to make their appointment, and keep their appointment – every year.”
