Brookwood Medical Center provides medical and/or surgical treatment to patients without the use of allogenic blood or primary blood components. This treatment, also known as bloodless* medicine, uses special blood conservation methods before, during, and after surgery to minimize blood loss and stimulate the circulatory system to work more efficiently. These techniques can also be used for treatment of a medical illness.
This service was developed to provide an alternative for patients who choose to receive medical and/or surgical care without the use of blood transfusions. The program offers a team approach with physicians, nurses, and support staff who have special experience and understanding of non-blood patient care treatment. Please consult with your physician or surgeon to learn more about bloodless medicine.
* "Bloodless" means medical or surgical treatment without the use of banked (stored) allogenic blood or primary blood components. Blood loss often occurs during surgery. A bloodless program endeavors to minimize blood loss by utilizing special blood conservation methods.
