BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – June 19, 2011 – Brookwood Medical Center is pleased to join Heather and Mitchell Carroll in announcing the birth of sextuplets. More than 50 medical professionals assisted in the delivery and care of Mrs. Carroll and the six newborns immediately following their birth.
Born June 18, 2011, at 28 weeks gestation, the babies are in stable condition in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The babies – five girls and one boy – ranged in weight from between 2 pounds, 5 ounces; to 1 pound, 10 ounces.
Mrs. Carroll’s condition is stable and she is resting well, according to Bill McKenzie, MD, OB‐GYN South, PC.
“Heather and Mitchell Carroll were committed to this journey, their family and community weresupportive, and God was faithful,” Dr. McKenzie said. “I am so proud of this mother’s toughness and appreciative for the excellent preparation and care she received at Brookwood Medical Center.”
“This is a historical day for Brookwood Medical Center,” said Amy Beard, MSN, RN, NEA‐BC, administrative director of women’s services at Brookwood. “Our Labor and Delivery and NICU teams are seasoned providers of high risk pregnancy and neonatal care. While multiple births are a common occurrence in our facility, this delivery required a high level of preparation and orchestration. We were well prepared, and I couldn’t be more proud of our team.”
