The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physicians' and medical organizations' recommendations. Its goal is to help consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging health professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of healthcare nationwide. 

Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement  is awarded to medical facilities exhibiting a commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for patients who undergo knee and hip replacement procedures. Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement demonstrate experience in offering comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services, including total knee replacement and total hip replacement.

The selection criteria used in designating Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement  include:

·      Established acute-care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency care and a full range of patient-support services with full accreditation by a CMS-deemed national accreditation organization

·      Experience and training of program surgeons, including case volume

·      Quality-management programs, including surgical checklists as well as tracking and evaluation of clinical outcomes and process of care

·      Multi-disciplinary clinical pathways and teams to coordinate and streamline care, including transitions of care

·      Shared decision making and preoperative patient education
