What is a High-Risk Pregnancy ?

Every pregnancy can have some risks, but certain conditions can alert your doctor to a higher risk of danger to your health and the health of your baby.  The causes may be conditions you already have, or they may be conditions you develop during your pregnancy. Being pregnant with more than one baby, a history of previous problem pregnancies or being over age 35 are some of the situations that may make a pregnancy high risk.

If you have a chronic condition, you should talk to your obstetrician about how to minimize your risk before you get pregnant.  Once you are pregnant,  you may need a multidisciplinary approach to monitor your pregnancy.  Examples of common conditions that can complicated a pregnancy include:

  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Kidney Problems
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Gestational Diabetes
