High Risk Pregnancy and Delivery

Even when you're doing everything you can to ensure a healthy pregnancy, you may encounter unexpected challenges.  Managing a high risk pregnancy requires a high degree of medical expertise. Brookwood is one of the only hospitals in Birmingham to have a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Physician specialist who is trained to care for women with a high-risk pregnancy.

What is a High-Risk Pregnancy?

Certain conditions can alert your doctor to a higher risk of danger to your health and the health of your baby. Being pregnant with multiples, a history of previous problem pregnancies or being over age 35 are some of the situations that may make a pregnancy more high-risk.

Examples of conditions that can complicate a pregnancy include heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney problems, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, cancer, or gestational diabetes.
