The Brookwood High Risk Breast & Ovarian Center is a multi-disciplinary program designed to identify, counsel and manage women at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Advancements in medicine have identified certain risk factors that may influence a women’s chance of developing breast or ovarian cancer. Identifying women with these risk factors and implementing a surveillance and prevention plan can lead to earlier cancer detection.

The Brookwood High Risk Breast & Ovarian Center has collaborative relationships with Genetic Counseling, Surgery, Medical Oncology, Gynecology Oncology, Gynecology, Plastic Surgery, Nutrition and Behavioral Medicine.

·        Cancer risk assessment based on personal risk factors and family history

·        Genetic counseling and testing

·        Personalized education and cancer prevention planning

·        Navigation support and referrals to provide seamless access to physician specialists and other hospital resources, as appropriate

Genetic Testing for Breast and Ovarian Cancer

Does breast or ovarian cancer run in your family? Brookwood’s center offers genetic testing to determine if you are at a higher risk for developing these cancers. Knowing your risk can help you and your doctor make better, more informed decisions about your health, before cancer has a chance to develop. You should consider testing for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome if you have had: 

·        Breast cancer before age 50

·        Ovarian cancer at any age

·        Two primary breast cancers in an individual

·        Both breast and ovarian cancer in an individual or family

·        Male breast cancer at any age

·        Two or more breast cancers in a family, one under age 50

Other considerations are: 

·        Women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent with breast or ovarian cancer at any age

·        A previously identified BRCA mutation in the family
