Having Your Baby at Brookwood

Many mothers-to-be already have a vision for the day their baby will arrive. At Brookwood, we work with you to create a personalized birthing plan that transforms your vision into reality. With facilities and dedicated staff for each step of the process – labor, delivery and recovery – we’re here to ensure you and your baby are in the safest, most comfortable environment possible. We’ll be with you throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and as you prepare to take your newborn home and adjust to the changes of a growing family.

q     Your Pregnancy -  We have the resources to provide you and your baby with the benefits of a healthy pregnancy from prenatal care to information and classes on childbirth, infant safety and breastfeeding. We work with you to create a personalized birth plan, provide special amenities for our mothers-to-be, and even offer tours for your baby’s future big brother or big sister in preparation for the big day.

q     Labor & Delivery – You will have your own dedicated nurse throughout labor and delivery. If your birthing plan involves a natural, unmedicated delivery, we have a variety of birthing equipment, including water birth tubs, to provide comfort and calmness throughout labor. Alternatively, if you would prefer a medicated delivery, we have a 24-hour anesthesia team dedicated solely to the Women’s Medical Center. We strongly encourage skin-to-skin contact between mom and baby immediately after delivery. Research has shown this approach provides a host of health benefits to your newborn.

q     Mother & Baby Suites and Nurseries – Once your baby arrives, we provide suites for you and your growing family, as well as a well-baby nursery and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to provide the most appropriate care for your baby. In addition, you’ll have access to our breastfeeding consultants and the services of the Kay Dahle Lactation Center to help you and your baby adjust to a new routine.

q     High Risk Pregnancy & Delivery - Even when you're doing everything you can to ensure a healthy pregnancy, you may encounter unexpected challenges.  If that happens, Brookwood is one of the only hospitals in Birmingham with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Physician specialist who is trained to care for women with a high-rick pregnancy. In addition to a specialized physician, our special services for high-risk pregnancies include genetic testing with first trimester diagnosis, advanced ultrasound testing, a comprehensive diabetes and pregnancy program, dedicated high-risk pregnancy unit and a world-class, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

q     Getting Fit After Delivery - Staying in shape is important in every woman’s life, especially as your body changes during pregnancy. We offer classes both before and after your pregnancy to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.
