Aug 20, 2019

Knapheide named in top leader list in national healthcare trade publication

Debbie KnapheideNOGALES (July 15, 2019) – Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital Chief Executive Officer Debra Knapheide is included in the Becker’s Hospital Review list of “Critical Access Hospital CEOs to Know” for 2019. Becker’s is a nationally recognized healthcare industry trade publication.

As a federally-recognized critical access hospital, Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital is a cornerstone of the community, providing access to healthcare for a broad population.

The 25-bed facility provides emergency care, general surgery, labor and delivery services, rehabilitation services and health and wellness education for residents of Santa Cruz County in Southern Arizona.

“The men and women included on this list lead hospitals with 25 beds or fewer that have been recognized for innovation, quality and patient safety on the local and national level… These individuals hold an important role within their community, serving on corporate boards and state-level initiatives to improve access to care,” notes Becker’s in its introduction to the CEO list.

Knapheide is CEO, chief nursing officer and chief operating officer of Holy Cross Hospital, where she is responsible for operations, planning, clinical services and medical staff direction. She also was included in the Becker’s Hospital Review list of “Women Hospital and Healthcare Leaders to Know” for 2018.

Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital received Critical Access Hospital recognition certification in 2017 from the National Rural Health Resource Center, recognizing its work with the Community Healthcare Integrated Paramedicine Program. It is also certified as a Critical Access facility by The Joint Commission.

The hospital works with emergency medical services to address the needs of those who frequently use the 911 system and the hospital emergency room. The collaboration evaluates ER usage to develop strategies for proactive education and treatment to reduce unneeded ER visits, according to Knapheide.

Holy Cross Hospital also focuses on offering community education and outreach on key health issues including prenatal care, obesity, diabetes, well-child visits and preventive care, she said. The hospital also offers 3D mammography, wound care and general surgery.

“Holy Cross Hospital has a long history of providing care for Santa Cruz County communities,” said Knapheide. “It’s an honor to be recognized for our work in this collaborative effort to sustaining access to health services for rural communities.”
